A vest does one job well: it keeps your core warm while leaving your arms free. Over a hoodie in autumn, it is the layer that makes the difference between being cold and being comfortable without the bulk of a full jacket.
Build
Padded body with a synthetic fill, a full-length zip with a chin guard, and either a funnel or stand collar. Pockets are zipped on the outer body. The shell is usually a technical nylon with a water-repellent finish.
Fit
Cut to sit over a hoodie, so the body is generous through the chest. The armholes are sized to avoid gaping. Take your normal size over a hoodie; size down if you plan to wear it only over a tee.
Styling
Over a hoodie with tracksuit bottoms is the natural pairing. It also works over a knit for something slightly smarter, since the vest adds structure without the visual weight of a coat.
